"An Eye for an Eye Makes the Whole World Blind"
The following statement is a
distillation of my vision and purpose for Writing and Producing the
film herein described:
I am in pre production on a unique
film, with actors, for theatrical release using an innovative
structure and style. It addresses the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.
The story of the Refusniks of the Israeli Military refusing missions
of revenge or occupation.
Potential source material is the
Peretz Kidron Compiled and Edited, "Refusnik!: Israel's Soldiers of
Conscience". Widely vilified and frequently imprisoned, this film
will portray the Refusniks as true heroes.
As additional thematic source
material Avraham Burg's (former Speaker of the Knesset and Chairman
of the World Zionist Organization) recent best seller,
"The Holocaust is Over We Must Rise From its Ashes". "In Burg's view
Israel must move beyond Hitler's poisoned legacy. If they cannot or
will not do this, the Middle East will never see peace and Israel
has no future."
Additional potential source material:
Norman Finkelstein’s, “Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of
Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History”. “ …about the daily
practices of the occupation and colonization of the Palestinian
territories by Israel …why the blind defenders of Israel, by basing
their arguments on false fact and figures, actually bring more
damage than gains to their cause”-Baruch Kimmerling, George S. Wise
Professor of Sociology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
I feel that it is past time for
Israel to stop using the Holocaust as an excuse to oppress others
and for all Jews to follow G-d's commandments.
If Jews are not obligated to take the moral high ground, who then?
Is this not exactly why Jews are "the chosen"?
The current conception of the
structure of the film is a "coming of age" story of a righteous, but
naive young American man who makes Aliya to Israel (emigrates) and
joins the Army. A grandson of Holocaust survivors, very close to his
grandparents, he develops a commitment to human rights at a young
age.
The setting is at the time after the
2009 Invasion of Gaza.
As our young protagonist learns of real life in Israel, he discovers
that the "Holy Land" is anything but being rife with hypocrisy. He
learns graphically about the unjust suffering of the Palestinian
people-especially innocent children.
This narrative will be inter-cut with
news/interview footage pointedly reinforcing the immoral present
reality. The structure will expand and depend on the precedent of
the usage of documentary-like material used to help drive a
narrative film.
The narrative/dramatic material will
be shot in the style of Electronic News Gathering (ENG). The most
current similar example is Jonathan Demme’s, “Rachael Getting
Married, shot with hand held cameras using only available light.
The viewer of our film, at times,
will not know if they are watching the narrative story or the
inter-cut documentary-like footage.
I do not have a platform or desire to
present any peace proposal (s).
Only the moral imperative.
I seek like minds to consult and any
potential funders/Producers.
It seems feasible that the inter-cut
news/interview footage compiled may define/inspire the narrative
script.
Initial funds are needed to develop
the documentary-like material and narrative script
The working title for the film comes
from the lips of M.Gandhi:
"An Eye for an Eye Makes the Whole World Blind".
